This Mathematics unit helps students describe the features and make models of 3D objects.

It consists of 4 lessons of approximately 60-minutes duration.

The sequence of lessons and suggested time frames should be regarded as a guide only; teachers should pace lessons in accordance with the individual learning needs of their class.

An assessment task for monitoring student understanding of the unit objectives is included and will require an additional lesson.

### Overview

#### Objectives

• To establish the students' current understanding of 2D shapes and 3D objects.
• To classify prisms as objects that have two congruent ends.
• To classify pyramids as objects that have a base face, from which their name is derived, and triangles for all other faces.
• To explore the features of spheres, cylinders, cones and dodecahedrons.

#### Preparing for Learning

Shape Seekers follows the story of Professor Dede and his new invention, ‘The Dimensionator’. This machine is able to convert 2D shapes into 3D objects. Each lesson, the students will help calibrate and operate the device using their knowledge of prisms, pyramids, spheres, cylinders, cones and dodecahedrons.

Prior to commencing the unit, familiarise yourself with the Shape Seekers PowerPoint.ย This presentation is split into four chapters and is used during each lesson. Ensure the terminology used to describe 3D objects aligns with the preferences of your school.

Read the lessons and organise any materials that are required before commencing the unit.

An assessment task designed for students to demonstrate their ability to make 3D object models and describe their features.
