A fun, getting-to-know-you game to play in the first days of a new school year.

Use this resource at the beginning of the school year as a way for your students to learn the names of their new classmates. It also works well as a phonemic awareness preassessment at the start of the year.

How to use this resource:

  1. Write each student’s name on a notecard and spread them out faceup on the floor.
  2. Have the class stand in a large circle (or rectangle) around the notecards.
  3. Choose one student to start the activity. Read a Know-That-Name Task Card to the student. While performing the action given on the card, the student must simultaneously find a name that matches the description, e.g. Walk like a duck to a name with two syllables.
  4. Once they have found a card, have them say the name. The student whose name is said says, ‘That’s me!’ and gives a wave. Once a name has been said, pick up the card so that it can no longer be used.
  5. Continue in this manner until everyone has had a turn.

A set of blank cards has been included for you and your students to create your own cards.

Use the drop-down menu to choose between the color or black and white version.
