A roll to create template for students to use when learning to use strip diagrams.
A strip diagram is a problem solving strategy that can be applied to all operations.
Use this teaching resource when teaching students how to solve single and multi-step problems using a strip diagram. It can easily be used and differentiated with all levels of students.
How to use this resource:
- Students roll a die multiple times to determine the numbers they will use in their problem. You can set the number of times they roll depending on student level and if you are wanting them to work with a single-step problem or a multi-step problem. For larger numbers, have the student roll the die 2, 3, or 4 times and put the numbers together to create a 2, 3, or 4-digit number, e.g. if the student rolls a 2, 5, and 4, their number will be 254.
- Students create an equation using the numbers they rolled. Again, depending on student level, students will place an unknown somewhere in their equation.
- Students will create a strip diagram to solve the equation.
- Students will write a word problem to reflect their equation.
Print this template on cardstock and place inside a dry-erase sleeve for students to use with a dry-erase marker. Place it inside a math center for students to work on in pairs. One student can write a word problem and pass it to their partner to write the equation and solve using a strip diagram.
